Burner Art Odyssey

The Burner Art Odyssey program is designed to strengthen the Burning Man regional community through participating in engaging arts-centered events within major cities. While art is the vehicle, community connection is the mission.

Inaugural Burner Art Odyssey: Alexandria, VA

Where: The Torpedo Factory

When: Saturday April 27th, 2024
10:30 am – 2:00 pm

Join us as Veronica Barker-Bezel, burner/ resident artist, leads a tour of The Torpedo Factory, in Alexandria, VA.

Veronica is a painter and a printmaker. Her style is often reflective of the places that she has experienced and stimulated by her
personal background, and occasionally fused with her own version of urban surrealism. Veronica explores worlds of playful adventure through her art. Her work is her search to express herself from within personal sanctuaries of carved lines in a relief block, the etched surface of a zinc
plate, or the paint brushing across canvas. She wants to invoke thought, curiosity, and laughter. The pleasures of laughter and joy bring on a healing release that everyone needs.

The day begins with a light brunch in an historic residence from 10:30 until noon, when we’ll walk two blocks to the Torpedo Factory for a two hour tour of the art space.

Schedule:

10:30 Visit with fellow Burners over a light brunch in an historic residence in Old Town Alexandria, VA. (211 N Fairfax Street, Metro to King Street Station, bus or Trolley to City Hall, walk two blocks)

12:00 Walk to the Torpedo Factory Art Center (105 N Union St Alexandria, VA 22314), home to the nation’s largest collection of working-artists’ open studios under one roof. Artists actively create work in a wide variety of media in 71 artists’ studios. Observe the creative process and ask questions.

12:10 Meet with fellow Burner and Torpedo Factory Resident Artist Veronica Barker-Barzel. Veronica shares a little history of the arts center while leading us through the factory. Participants will be able to visit with other artists in residence. Veronica will share information about printmaking and using silk screens. Participants will be able to “pull” their own pieces of art to commemorate the day!
